As we all know, life is unpredictable. We can’t always be fully prepared for what gets thrown at us. However, we can try our best to be adaptable and prepare for the worst.

How can you prepare for unexpected emergencies as a freelancer?

What Is The Proper Etiquette For Working Through An Emergency?

Emergencies happen. Whether it’s a natural disaster, a car accident, sickness, etc, how can you keep your clients informed?

First and foremost, always keep your clients informed of any emergencies that can arise. As much communication as you can manage is important.

We are all human. Most of the time, clients will understand when unexpected life events come up. They may be able to assist you by extending deadlines, helping with your workload, or shortening your hours.

Natural Disasters

As a freelancer, no one expects you to work through a disaster. However, it is important to notify your clients of your absence if you can.

With the possibility of no access to WiFi or phone service, how can you connect with your clients?

If you are aware of the natural disaster before it occurs, you should notify your clients before you possibly lose power or WiFi.

Working Ahead

To avoid extra stress during a crisis, you should make working ahead a part of your daily work habits.

Working ahead can give you some time between your unexpected event and your deadlines. That way, if you become unexpectedly sick or injured, your important deadlines will be far from your mind during a crisis.

Working On The Go

Nowadays, with iPads, laptops, Zoom, smart phones, etc, work can be done from anywhere!

You can bring all of these devices on the go to stay in touch with your clients during any unforeseen life events. You should sync all of your client contact information and all of your digital files to make working anywhere easier.

Ask For Help

Abrupt natural disasters, family emergencies, sickness, or whatever life may throw your way are not easy to handle. You are not a superhero, you can’t do it all.

Don’t be afraid to outsource whatever you can. Hire child care, sign up for a meal delivery service, hire a professional to take care of your invoices, etc. Lean on the people around you for help.
